Innovation & Sustainability
Artificial intelligence (AI) is on everyone’s lips. But what does that mean for the shipping industry and for us boaters? We take a look at the ways in which AI is already making boats smarter, safer and more efficient.

There’s a lot of hype surrounding artificial intelligence, and not just because industry heavyweight Peter Steinberger made it onto Armin Wolf’s ZIB programme.
First and foremost, artificial intelligence is and remains a tool for specific purposes. Like a hammer, but a bit smarter. Most people have probably already heard of ChatGPT or been pleased with the AI-generated search results on Google.
But AI can do much more. In his engineering firm, Gernot Neuböck uses Claude to develop or discuss standards for the design of marine propulsion systems. In addition, the intelligence integrated into his tools optimises the hydrodynamics of a wide variety of components. In production, shipyards such as the Ferretti Group or Sunseeker, for example, rely on AI-controlled robots. These precisely layer and bond fibre-reinforced composite parts for hulls and superstructures.
So, indirectly, we are already benefiting. But where and how can we use which tools ourselves? I already use ChatGPT and similar tools when planning trips, searching for ports and carrying out minor repairs. Such a little helper is also very valuable when preparing for exams, to better understand more complex concepts.
The Linz-based company Sea.AI optimises its products for specific needs. Its Watchkeeper acts as a co-pilot, keeping watch round the clock. This is important not just for solo sailors, as these products see things that we and others do not. For the safety of us all.
In future, AI will further enhance comfort, safety and efficiency. Very soon, we’ll simply press a button in the harbour and the boat will manoeuvre into its berth with centimetre precision, regardless of wind and current. Inexperienced skippers will thus be able to enjoy a holiday on the water without posing a safety risk to themselves or others.
We can then decide whether we want to enjoy the journey from A to B in a minimalist style or with comfort and voice control.
