Innovation & Sustainability
Innovation is more than just a buzzword – it solves real problems. Why a better propeller saves up to 30% energy and why POP Fenders are revolutionising boating. How Austria’s pioneers are enhancing our boating experience – without compromise.

Innovation and sustainability – two terms we’re bombarded with in the media every day. In this column, I’ll explore why they’re still important and what they mean for us boating enthusiasts.
A dear friend of mine always says: “Innovation is an idea in action” – one that solves a problem and for which customers are willing to pay. But when does a problem become a problem? Take the propeller: due to its low efficiency, it wastes around 50% of the energy. That’s not a problem as long as diesel and petrol are cheap and plentiful. With electric and hybrid boats, however, where energy is limited, this becomes a problem. Our aim must be to continue to have sufficient power, range and driving pleasure at our disposal. To achieve this, we need to find entirely new solutions based on innovation.
So we need a “better propeller”! Sounds simple – but it isn’t! Because the physical principles make implementation extremely complex. It takes the interplay of many different technical expertises to create something new. With the Hydro Impulse, developed in Graz, the right solution is now available. Compared to the classic propeller, it transfers significantly more energy into the water and recovers significantly more energy under sail. For you, this means lower purchase and operating costs, as well as more space thanks to smaller systems.
Speaking of space: the Vorarlberg-based company POP Fender minimises the space required with its telescopic fenders. They never run out of air, are gentle on the hull, don’t squeak, can be used underwater and are an eye-catcher in any marina. POP Fender is a superb example of how new approaches can generate added value.
These two exemplary innovations show how we can improve our (boating) world. Which issues would you like to see resolved? Where does the shoe pinch when it comes to boating? Write to us – we’ll get back to you!
With that in mind: Three cheers for innovation Made in Austria!
